Final Project - Figurative Language Music Video

A recapitulation of the requirements:
- Identify at least six different types of figurative language/literary devices
- Identify at least ten examples total
- Identify the type of figurative language/literary device and the quote to which it refers to.
-At the absolute minimum, you should have at least 12-15 slides. Ideally, you should have no less than 6 slides/minute.

iMovie Help

To use PowerPoint and Keynote to make slides, follow the directions below.


PowerPoint
1. Design your slides one at a time. Follow the saving process below for each one.
2. Go to "Save As." Under format, choose JPG.
3. Save the file to your desktop. It should be a folder.
4. Open iPhoto. Import the jpg to iPhoto.
5. In iMovie, go to Media and iPhoto. Look in the folder for "Last Roll." Your slide should be in that folder.

Keynote
1. Design your slides one at a time. Follow the saving process below for each one.
2. Go to File and then Export.
3. Click on the Images icon.
4. Save this as a JPG. Set the quality to high.
5. Click Next. Enter the name of your file.
6. Your file should now be in iPhoto. 
7. In iMovie, go to Media and iPhoto. Look in the folder for "Last Roll." Your slide should be in that folder.

GOAL: Utilize your knowledge of figurative language terms to create a music video in iMovie. You will analyze the lyrics of the a song of your choice to find examples of figurative language. You must find at least six different types of figurative language in your song and identify at least twelve examples. 

Directions: Choose a school-appropriate song (at the very least, a clean edited version) to use for your music video. Complete the following steps.
1. Print out or write down the lyrics.
2. Identify the literary devices and figurative language in the song. Write the term next to the line to which it refers. You must have at least six different types of figurative language/literary terms and twelve examples.
3. Bring this to class on Tuesday.

      Homework:
      Social aggression is defined as actions and behaviors directed at damaging another’s self-esteem, social status, or both. Many of the characters in OMAM are oppressed by society or other people and long for companionship. Yet, they tend to put down others to make themselves feel better.

      Find two examples of social aggression in OMAM. Identify the social aggressor and his/her weakness or vulnerability. Identify the victim, his/her weakness, what happened and how it affected the victim. Your response should be 2-3 sentences each.

      I am at Ballard Spahr with the freshmen today, so I apologize for not being in class. Below are your assignments.
      A.   Finish answering questions 6-10 on the back of the Setting worksheet.
      B.    Answer the following questions in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper. I will collect them tomorrow, along with your notes from pages 11-26.
      1. What is the story about the rabbits? What does this tell you about George and Lennie?
      2. What is the setting of the second chapter of the book? Describe it.
      3. How does the boss react to Lennie’s silence? Why does the boss find George and Lennie’s relationship unusual?
      4. What is George’s fear at this point?
      5. When Lennie questions George about telling the boss Lennie was kicked in the head by a horse, George says, “Be a damn good thing if you was… Save ever’body a hel of a lot of trouble” (23).  What does this mean?
      6. Who is Candy? What is his relationship to his dog?
      7. When George confronts Candy about eavesdropping, Candy says, “A guy on a ranch don’t never listen nor he don’t ask no questions” (24). What does this reveal about the lives of migrant workers?
      8. Who is Curley? Candy describes him as “handy” (26). What does that mean?

      Of Mice and Men Background Search

      With a partner, use the following websites to help you learn more about John Steinbeck, the setting and the time period of Of Mice and Men

      Open a Word document and email your responses to mccartneychs@gmail.com. 

      Use the following websites as starting points. You can also click on links and do your own searches.
      1. What events and situations led to the Dust Bowl?
      2. How many states did the Dust Bowl cover? In which area of the country?
      3. What happened to the population as a result of the Dust Bowl?


      1. Why did so many farmers hurt by the Dust Bowl go to California?
      2. Describe the working conditions and life styles for migrant workers. Where did they live? What were their jobs like?
      1. Take time to examine the photographs of migrant workers on these websites. Read the captions and study the photos for evidence of working and living conditions. In a response of 8-10 sentences, describe what you think life as a migrant worker would be like. 
      1. Lastly, do some research on the author, John Steinbeck. Write a response of 8-10 sentences explaining how his life experiences would influence him to write about California migrant workers.

      Define and review the following terms: first person point of view, third person limited point of view, third person omniscient point of view, objective point of view, irony, foreshadowing, characterization, theme, mood, tone, symbolism
      We applied these terms to the short story, "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin.

      Homework:
      Choose one of the literary devices from today or Monday to apply them to "The Story of an Hour." Explain how the literary term is used in the story and analyze its effectiveness. Does it add meaning to the story? How does the author use it to make her point?

      Use quotes from the story illustrate your argument. Your response should be at least a page.
