Mask Assignment: 

Part 1:  The Mask
You will be creating a “mask” that shows two sides of YOU:
v Who you feel you are on the inside
v A stereotype you feel others hold for you or how you feel others see you

You can use symbols, words, collage, images, drawings, poetry—or anything else to represent your ideas.  Be creative!

Part 2:  Write About It
Write an explanation of what you put on your mask and how each element represents you and the stereotype.  This should be 8-10 sentences.

Danny thinks to himself, "Tigo was the enemy, and so he presented a mask to the enemy" (1). Danny hides his fears and anxiety in order to appear as a tough gang member. 

Do all people wear a mask? What do you wear on your mask?  You may want to use a chart to help you brainstorm (see board). Explain your thoughts.

"The Last Spin" Discussion Questions

  1. Both men are understandably nervous. Find some examples that show this taken from the text.
  2. How does their attitude towards their clubs change over the story?
  3. What is the climax of the story? Explain. At what point do Tigo and Danny start to get along? Why do you think this is important?
  4. What stereotypes do Danny and Tigo portray? Do you think these stereotypes represent who they really are?


Homework:
An interior monologue is the imagined thoughts of a character at a specific point in time.  Put yourself in Tigo’s shoes.  Tap into his feelings.  On a separate sheet, write from Tigo’s point of view what he is feeling and thinking at the very end of this story.  You may do this as prose or poetry. Be prepared to share this response with the class.

Subsequent is an adjective, not a verb. 
NO:

  • My dog subsequents me when we go for a walk. 
  • I have to subsequent directions in school.
  • There are a lot of kids who subsequent others at my old school. 

YES:
  • My subsequent ideas contradicted what I first thought.
  • The subsequent signs directed Maggie to her destination.
  • The first time I flew on an airplane, I was terrified. On the subsequent trips I was fine.

Zeal is a noun. Zealous is an adjective.

A.    Answer the following questions about “American History” on a separate sheet of paper.
1.     Eugene and Elena come from very different cultures, yet they have some things in common. What are they?
2.     The story takes place on the day of JFK’s assassination. President Kennedy was committed to eliminating prejudice and establishing equal rights for all Americans. How does Elena encounter prejudice in the story?
3.     On page 5, Elena walks to Eugene’s house and thinks about the history of El Building. What does she realize about the history of her neighborhood and the people who lived there before her?
4.     Read the last paragraph of the story. Pay attention to Elena’s description of the snow. Why do you think she pays such close attention to the snow? How could her experience relate to the snow turning gray?
5.     Why do you think this story is called “American History”? Explain.

B.    Read your Upfront Magazine and complete AOTW #5: Choose one of the following articles to read. Write your AOTW in your Writer’s Notebook.
1.     "Unsafe Behind the Wheel" pages 6-7

How will my writer's notebook be graded?

  • Each AOTW response should be at least ten sentences and reflect upon the article
  • Each Writing Prompt should reflect effort. You typically have ten minutes to write in class, so each entry should be at least 8-10 sentences. 
  • You will not be graded on your spelling or grammar. This is your chance to share your immediate thoughts and reflections without worrying too much about your writing conventions.
