Most common grammatical errors in the monologues

1. Capitalization.
  • Capitalize I.
    • i am a very important person; therefore, I always capitalize I.
  • Capitalize the names of proper nouns - people, places, brand names, specific events.
    • Constitution High School is a proper noun. However, referring to a general high school is not specific and does not need to be capitalized.
    • Jolly Ranchers are a specific brand of candy. If you are just talking about the general candy you got for Halloween, you do not need to capitalize it.
    • Capitalize the first letter of each sentence.
2. Homophones
  • Their/they're/there
    • their = possessive
    • they're = they are
    • there = location
  • Affect/effect
    • affect = to influence (verb)
    • effect = result or outcome (noun)
3. Run-on sentences
  • we will be taking notes to practice identifying and correcting run-on sentences in class.
